Basics: What are the Five Elements and Kua Number? Why choose a compatible car?

What is Ngũ Hành (the Five Elements)?

The Five Elements are Metal (Kim), Wood (Mộc), Water (Thủy), Fire (Hỏa), and Earth (Thổ) - each with its own set of colors. Elements relate to each other through a generating cycle (mutually supportive) and a controlling cycle (clashing, best avoided):

Generating cycle (each Element produces the next)

Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood.

Controlling cycle (each Element restrains the next)

Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.

So your lucky colors = your own element's colors + the colors of the element that generates you; unlucky colors = the colors of the element that overcomes you - exactly as shown in the "Destiny & Car Color" tab.

How is the Kua Number different from your Five-Element Destiny?

These are two different systems for two different purposes - so they can sometimes give a different "Destiny" result for the same person; that is not a mistake:

Five-Element Destiny (Na Yin)

Derived from the birth year's Stem-Branch - ONLY needs the birth year, regardless of gender. Used to choose a compatible car color, lucky items and license plate.

Cung Phi (Bát Trạch)

Derived from birth year + GENDER (the same birth year gives a different Kua number for men vs. women). Used to find a compatible travel/seating/parking direction.

The 4 good directions (Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, Fu Wei) and 4 bad directions (Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha, Huo Hai) are derived by comparing your Palace with the 8 directions using the "Du Niên Bát Biến" rule in Eight Mansions Feng Shui - a common method in Vietnamese almanacs, similar to what many house/travel-direction sites use.

Why choose a car color that matches your Element?

  • In feng shui belief, a compatible color/plate/lucky item helps the owner feel more at ease and favorable while on the road.
  • A nice-to-have extra once you're already happy with the model, price, and specifications.
  • Many matching colors (white, black, gray, silver...) are also neutral tones that hold resale value well.

What if your car isn't the matching color?

  • It's optional - just a reference factor with no effect on the car's quality or safety.
  • To improve it, you can repaint (costly, less common) or wrap the car with color decal (cheaper and reversible).
  • A simpler option: add compatible interior/exterior accessories (floor mats, seatbelt covers, hanging charms...) without changing the car's color.

Frequently asked questions

What car color suits Metal Destiny?
White, Grey, Silver, Earthy Yellow, Brown are the Element's own colors plus the colors generated for Metal (Five Elements generating cycle) - prioritize these when choosing a car. Avoid Red, Pink, Orange, which belongs to a controlling Element.
What car color suits Wood Destiny?
Green, Blue, Black are the Element's own colors plus the colors generated for Wood (Five Elements generating cycle) - prioritize these when choosing a car. Avoid White, Grey, Silver, which belongs to a controlling Element.
What car color suits Water Destiny?
Black, Blue, Grey, White are the Element's own colors plus the colors generated for Water (Five Elements generating cycle) - prioritize these when choosing a car. Avoid Earthy Yellow, Brown, which belongs to a controlling Element.
What car color suits Fire Destiny?
Red, Pink, Orange, Purple, Green are the Element's own colors plus the colors generated for Fire (Five Elements generating cycle) - prioritize these when choosing a car. Avoid Black, Blue, which belongs to a controlling Element.
What car color suits Earth Destiny?
Yellow, Brown, Red, Orange, Pink are the Element's own colors plus the colors generated for Earth (Five Elements generating cycle) - prioritize these when choosing a car. Avoid Green, which belongs to a controlling Element.
Why do men and women born in the same year get a different Cung Phi?
Your Kua Number (Eight Mansions) is calculated from your birth year COMBINED with gender, using separate formulas for men and women - unlike your Five-Element Destiny (Na Yin), which only needs your birth year. This is a standard convention in Eight Mansions Feng Shui, not a calculation error.
What is the basis for checking whether a license plate suits your Destiny?
It sums every digit in the plate, reduces the total to a single number (1-9) using the Nine Palaces rule, looks up the number's Five Element via the He Tu chart (1&6 Water, 2&7 Fire, 3&8 Wood, 4&9 Metal, 5 Earth), then compares it against both your Five Elements Destiny and your Kua number (2 separate results). Note: unlike Destiny/Kua above, there is no single agreed standard for converting a plate number to a Five Element online - other sites may give a different result, so treat this part as even more of a reference than the rest.
How are compatible/clashing ages calculated for co-owning a car or a transport business?
Based on the relationships between the 12 Earthly Branches (zodiac animals): Trine groups (3 ages forming one very compatible group), Paired matches (compatible pairs), and Direct clashes (opposing pairs, best avoided). Enter a second birth year in the "Compatible Ages & Lucky Items" tab to see a specific comparison.
Are feng shui items in the car mandatory?
Not mandatory - these are common suggestions based on your Five Elements Destiny, meant for reference, fun and peace of mind, with no effect on the car's quality or safety.
